Charred Nightstands

Beech; 12" x 12" x 18h"

Salvaged from a felled tree in a nearby park, these irregular, tough, and discolored beech stumps presented a challenge for conventional finishing techniques. To preserve the organic form and wrinkled texture, I took inspiration from the traditional Japanese practice of charred exterior siding. The result was a strikingly continuous and leathery texture, which contrasted well against the warm tones of the cross sectional cut, all while preserving the organic form and irregularities of the original tree trunk.
