NESTING BOXES

Yellow Cedar; various sizes

As a contemporary take on the indigenous woodworking practices of Canada’s First Nation’s peoples, these steam-bent cedar boxes merge ancient craft with modern sensibilities of proportion and minimal adornment. The process involves cross cutting wide kerfs along a single piece of solid lumber. Each corner is then steam-bent around a radius until the open ends meet at a miter to close the box. The lid is then flush fit and radiused, while the single mitered corner is kept sharp to provide asymmetrical balance and contrast against the soft edges throughout. Finished with hardwax-oil.
